Grass Stains

Do you love gardening? Do the kids or adults in your family play outdoor sports like baseball, football, soccer, softball? Do you enjoy picnics and outdoor concerts?

If so, you know that grass stains are a common result of outside activities. Unfortunately, they can ruin your clothes, because a grass stain is actually a "dye stain". Considering that most fabric dyes originally came from nature, it’s easy to see why removing grass stains is so difficult -- they can become permanent if not treated correctly.

Chlorophyll is the component of grass that gives it that luscious shade of green – and causes the problem. A grass stain is usually a mixture of various proteins, dirt and organic matter mixed with chlorophyll and other pigmented compounds called “xanthophylls and carotenoids.” This mixture actually binds to the garment’s natural fibers. Scotchgard™-ed fabric is incompatible with this “binding process”, so grass stains come out much easier. However, for normal fabrics, grass stain removal is quite difficult -- but not impossible!

If you return from an outdoor event, a family outing, a neighbor’s barbecue or a day of yard work with grass stains all over your kids’ shorts, the knees of your jeans, a lovely summer dress or your new sneakers, don’t despair!

To remove grass stains from your clothing:

  1. Apply a small amount of Goof Off® directly to the stain using the convenient spray nozzle.
  2. Allow it to penetrate the stain until it dissolves.
  3. Then, launder the garment according to the manufacturer’s instructions on the label.

NOTE: Every fabric is different so always test any grass stain cleaning product on an inconspicuous area of the garment for color fastness. Do not use on silk, leather, suede or acrylic.
